Smog Check Program Area Lookup
The Smog Check Program divides the state into three areas determined by the air quality in the designated area. Smog Check requirements and inspection types are determined by the area in which a vehicle is registered.
Enhanced Areas
: Urbanized areas of the state with serious, severe, or extreme nonattainment air quality. All Smog Check requirements apply in these areas.
Basic Areas
: Areas of the state with marginal air quality. All Smog Check requirements apply in these areas.
Change of Ownership Areas
: In these more rural areas of the state, a Smog Check is required when a vehicle changes ownership or when it is registered for the first time in California.
