BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System
The BAR-97 Emissions Inspection System (EIS) inspects vehicles under simulated driving conditions to detect oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
Model-year 1999 and older gasoline vehicles, any model year gasoline vehicle not equipped with OBD II, and any model year gasoline vehicle over 14,000 GVWR require inspection on the BAR-97 EIS.
For information on BAR-97 EIS inspection requirements, refer to the Smog Check Manual.
